The CAT 2009 results were out a few days back....although, inconsequential for my life of today, I started wondering about CAT 2006 and my perspective at that time. This was the time, exactly 3 years back I was preparing for my dream institute where I will pursue my MBA.
Coming from a strictly ordinary engineering college and working at again, an ordinary IT firm, CAT 2006 was my ticket to awesomeness, of proving to the world that I was much more than what my poor CV said. Of course, I was naive and had no clue of what was in store. Anyway, I cleared the obstacles and finally got my way into what is arguably regarded as the 4th best b-school in India.
MBA, for a lot of people is the way to earn more money, than what their current job gives. For a lot of people, it is their way of proving themselves and the world around that they belong to a better clique than they currently are in. For a lot less, its a way of honing their skills and understanding the nuances of business. For most, there lies a bigger picture beyond their raison d'etre of being an MBA - a job, a secured job, a high-paying job, a glamorous job.......and the list goes on.
I personally was a mixture of all this. Having had a strictly middle-class background, this is all your poor imagination can go to. All I wanted is - A Job that paid me lots.....who am I kidding....I still want it....its the perfect fairy tale.....for anyone....
But, its not how life happens....I guess.....
When you enter a b-school, all because of all the build-up and the pseudo-branding and hype around b-schools, you tend to expect a lot......really a lot. Like, you expect b-schools to be professional in whatever they do....why because they are honing India;s future managers.....You expect them to be very organized.....you expect fairness.....you expect maturity from students around you......you expect integrity.....you expect a certain level of honesty(really)......
But you know what......these things just do not exist in a b-school in India.....
